The duo worked together at West Brom and,Shakespeare has lured Appleton from League One Oxford since being confirmed in the City hotseat.
Appleton, 41, is set to double his wages to nearly £500,000 a year by switching bossing the U's for No.2 at the 2015-2016 Premier League champions.
Shakespeare said: “I am delighted that the club have been able to bring a coach of Michael’s standing to Leicester.
“Michael and I worked together at West Bromwich Albion and it quickly became clear that he possessed all the qualities and the integrity required to enjoy a successful coaching career.
“During his transition from a player to a coach, before later becoming a manager, Michael has already achieved great success in the game.

“That expertise, as well as his excellent coaching acumen, made him the perfect choice as assistant manager. I am sure that he will be a huge asset to Leicester as we strive to achieve our objectives over the coming seasons.”
Appleton comes with a growing reputation after previously turning down coaching offers from old club Manchester United and England U21s to stay at the U's.
They finished eighth this term and reached the EFL Trophy final at Wembley for the second year running after Appleton previously led them out of League Two since taking over in 2014.
Appleton said: "The opportunity to move to a Premier League club was something I felt that I couldn't turn down, which I hope fans will appreciate.”
